Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Some possibilities are:

1. It could be that you are accessing the wrong device name. To check that out right click on the icon, click on properties, and click on device. If the device name shown is something like /dev/cdrom or /dev/floppy then su to root and use these commands to find out if the device is linked to the proper device name:
ls -l /dev/cdrom
ls -l /dev/floppy

2. It could be that the device permissions are set for root only access. The ls -l commands also show permissions. So use the ls -l command to check the ultimate device names to see if users can access them. Another test is to log in as root and see if root can access the CD and floppy.

Be prepared. Create a LifeBoat CD.
