Results of print job a nightmare

Hey all. Well, I've finally managed to print beyond the test page (miracle...), but notice that the print results look strangely similar to dot matrix. My printer is an HP P1000 Photosmart printer capable of absolutely stunning color/black&white printing, so I know it has it in it, just not sure how to tell it how. I used apsfilter to setup the printer initially. The apsfilter's setup screen shows 600x600 resolution and print quality medium. Should I up the settings? The stuff it's printing looks absolutely atrocious, but legible, nonetheless. The weird thing is, I had no problems loading the necessary drivers and cups went off without a hitch, as did apsfilter. The only weird thing is that the interface still shows parallel. I was told not to worry about this as the usb module was substituted anyhow... Any and all help would be awesome.

Results from my cups admin page for printer description/info:

Default Destination: HP_P1000

HP_P1000 HP PhotoSmart P1000, CUPS+Gimp-Print v4.2.5
Description: HP_P1000
Location: /dev/usb/lp0
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs.
"Ready to print."
Device URI: usb://HP/PhotoSmart%20P1000?serial=MX05M1F151HP

Dunno what else to post, but if you tell me, consider it done.

Thanks in advance for any and all help on this ya'll.

Hey man, what's your mind loaded with? Just curious ;)

I'm no expert at printing in *nix, though I've a bit of a printing background in my life. I think Till, Grant, and Kurt have some great information, and they claim to be able to get some HP printers to print as well as in Windoze with proprietary HP drivers. I've not achieved it yet. This is one of the projects on my "things to get working properly in Slackware" list. I'm printing - just printed a little jpg my father sent me from the States. However, I can't print with GIMP, or Mozilla, and can't print using PageMaker under Wine - yet. I will get this going, also.

Try the information at Linux Printing. Here's the link for your specific printer
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...otoSmart_P1000

And please post back whatever you glean from this, so that the rest of us will learn, also.

Slackware 9.1 defaults to lprng rather than cups. You should be sure that all the lp* in /usr/bin/lp* are linked to cups files rather than lprng files. Also, it is possible in KDE to pick your default print system per user, so be sure you are printing via CUPS rather than lprng. The test page should give you details on the charactaristics it knows of your printer. Try different resolutions to test the CUPS capability. I tend to use http://localhost:631 to setup and test the printer, then edit the files manually if necessary.

RE

Hey there peeps. Just to give ya'll an update... I fixed the problem myself. The HP drivers installed without a hitch and yes, lprng wanted to control printing initially. I found that by using cups coupled with apsfilter and the installation of Ghostscript (which doesn't come installed on 9.1 by default, I found out the hard way, :)), the process worked awesome. When I first finished configuring cups, I couldn't understand why the test page looked awesome, but when going to terminal and using lp <filename>, it resulted in a dot-matrix-like appearance. So, logically, there had to be some translation coming from the default lp process, not just the test page. It dawned on me that NO packages were installed, aka Postscript OR Ghostscript. After I installed Ghostscript, it worked like a champ.

Needless to say, there was a lot of frustration involved in getting this to work properly. With even more frustration headed my way (now to get this printer to talk with my LAN which includes another slack box, Debian box, Powerbook OS X Panther and Windows 2k), I'll at least know what mistakes NOT to repeat...

I have to admit, the printing results on Linux look MUCH sharper than on the Windows box. I think it might have something to do with the GIMP print drivers or the Ghostscript. Quite impressive.

It was asked where the name came from. The name was thought up after realizing that I had 4 different MCSE exams to study for, as well as finals to contend with. Hence, a loaded mind...

Loadedmind,

Thanks for the reply with that info. That's gonna help me, and others who search LQ.

What version of GIMP do you use, and what drivers are you printing with? I have GIMP 1.3.23 retrieved from Slack current, but when I went after the gimp-print drivers, the site says, "The Print plug-in for the GIMP requires the Gimp 1.2. The Gimp 1.3 is not supported at this time." Because of that I downloaded the driver but didn't pursue installation. Could you share how you're printing through GIMP? Thanks!
