restricted drivers

I'm running kubuntu 8.04 on an Asus P5LD2 motherboard.
For the graphics I use an Asus GeForce 7300GS with 256MB DDR2, in an PCI-e slot. So I need the restricted nVidia drivers.

Common practice for my workstation is that I have 8 (eight) desktops, because I hate all those windows packed together on one desktop

Today I activated the restricted drivers for my graphics card, with some incomprehensible results.

The number of desktops was changed to 2 (two) and no matter how hard I tried, I could not get my 8 desktops back again.
In some applications I could not get the focus on that particular application.

After having deactivated the restricted drivers everything came back to normal, after a restart.

This is puzzling me, and I'd like to know why this happened.
