resolution issues - intel 815 chip set

right, sorry if this is stupid (again)

bought an old IBM Netvista 6578 fom the office
Intel 815 chip set
running REHL 3 ES

Try to change the screen resolution (1024X768 just doesn't do it for me)
Log out

When it comes back up, I have these vertical lines across the screen.
XF86Config looks like it's got the chipset and the monitor right
Went to the Intel website, they have some packages there if you're running Xfree86 3.3.6 or less, so I don't think it's that it

Any suggestions?

Still a newbie, but I'm getting (a little) better

Thanks
