resolution changed - can't return to normal resolution

I was evaluating a live distro on a USB drive and the resolution got changed from my normal 1680X1050 to 1024X768. I normally run SuperOS (ubuntu derivative) at 1680X1050 on my 22" LCD flatscreen monitor. The users manual for the monitor says that the optimum resolution is 1680X1050. Now when I go to system, preferences, monitors the monitor is unknown and the highest resolution that is available is 1360X768. I have clicked on Detect Monitors but not sure anything is happening. I have went to system, administration, additional drivers but none show up. The OSD menu for the monitor is showing 1380X768. I haven't been able to make any changes to the setting. I push the button that is supposed to get me into the sub-menu but nothing happens. Can someone tell me how I might resolve this dilemma that I find myself in?

Did you have to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get your resolution first. Post your xorg.conf or attach it as plan text.

Here is what I did to fix it. I went into Windows XP -- mycomputer, properties, hardware, devices, and there were two monitors listed. I deleted one of them but didn't re-boot back into windows. I went back into SuperOS. After posting my question here, I shut the computer down and went to bed thinking that late at night is not the best time to try and solve a problem. After thinking about possible solutions, I decided that I would go back into XP the next morning and try updating the driver. I am more familiar with some things in Windows than in Linux.

Anyway, when I got back into XP the resolution was back to normal and there were two monitors listed again. I tried to update the drivers anyway but there were none better so I re-booted back into SuperOS and the resolution is back to 1680X1050. It seems that I posted too soon. I hope this will help someone else that has a similar problem.

second edit..
To answer your question about editing the xorg.conf file. No I did not edit it to get the resolution originally. The only xorg.conf file that I find on SuperOS is located at /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/examples. Here is what it has in it..
Quote:
# Minimal xorg.conf for the Nouveau driver

Section "Device"
Identifier "Default screen"
Driver "nouveau"
EndSection

you may have the latest version of xorg. I think it can run with out a xorg.conf file. The xorg conf file in /usr/share.../examples is just a example file. Well glad to hear you got it back up and running.
