Resolution Change Problem

Ok, I am going crazy lately, I've asked in EVERY single linux forum around and no one seems to know what the problem is.

I just installed SuSE Linux and I can't get my screen to change the resolution other than 800x600. I have looked around for drivers, I found Intel's for my chipset and I installed them. Well guess what, that didn't work. Also, when I go to the control panel sort of, it shows that it does not recognize my monitor. I enter the configuration myself, my monitor is a DELL M782. But when I apply the changes, the computer goes all black and there;s no way to put it all back as it was before other than going into the command line and restarting the X Server.

Does anyone know what mght be going on with my monitor/Intel, or whatever it is messing my life?

what does your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or XFree86.conf) say? Have you tried editing that file?

not sure on the support for your monitor, but try using a default generic monitor...
resolution is dictated by a combination of monitor and graphics chip...
if you know the horizontal refresh rates of your monitor and the vertical, then you can select the closest to yours as a generic and dont try to find the exact one by vendor...
but beware, do not use a higher horizontal refresh than your monitor can handle....
even linus torvalds will say that...("if you do make sure you have the fire department on stand by....")
now with this setting you should be able to get most resolutions that are available, but make sure you have them right...
one thing to have right as well is the graphics chips...but if its only resolution then you may have that right already....best of luck...
