resizing my linux partition

I started off with a 40 gig hdd, then i partitioned it so i had a 25 gig drive for windows and the rest was used for Linux, now im getting the hang of Linux i could do with some more space on my Linux box (the / partition needs 5.5 gig for unreal 2004!!!) im desperate to get the game up and running but i have had problems trying to resize the drive.

I chopped 5 gig off the windows drive using partition magic so now i have a healthy 5 gig of unpartitioned free space on my hdd, could someone please tell me how do i go about adding this to my Linux drive?

Suse 9.1 and windows xp both on hda
hda1=win NTFS
hda2=swap
hda3=linux reiserfs

Thanks.

Menu K > System > Yast (need root psw). Inside Yast: system > partitioner. There you go! Create a new partition, format with reiser. Faster than running an illegal op under win98.

The easiest (and IMO best) option is to create the new partition and use it to mount some part of your linux directory tree, for example I have /home mounted on its own partition so when I upgrade Slackware I simply don't format this partition thus keeping all my settings and downloaded files intact, then setting up the system is as easy as copying my config files back to where they belong, XF86Config back to /etc/X11, fstab back to /etc and so on.

wow!!! what a tool, even for the novice like myself))

system rescue cd

real easy to use, download, burned with k3b, boot off the cd
at the prompt i chose QtParted as it mentioned a graphical ui and i seem a lot more confident in a gui at the moment as its not long since i made the switch.. anyway, i was able to delete the new partition that i made in the previously free space at the end of my drive, then select my linux / partition and stretch it to fill the void, commit the change and its done. reeboot into linux and all is fine, now i just have to install UT again but i prefer this option to having loads of partitions, makes it easier to keep track of things.

thanks for all the help, this forum is great and im sure to be around for a while to come.

Hi todd!
Sysrec is a real sweet thing, I agree. And its a small iso!

By the way, which fs are you using in this linux /? Is it reiser?

think so, it says reiserfs in KDiskFree if this is the same, have attached a pic. also i recently got more ram, should i increase the size of my swap partition? got 1.5gig of DDR 400Mhz now ))

cant post attachments for some reason so this is what kdiskfree says to me:

dev/hda1 ntfs 20.5
dev/hda3 reiserfs 16.0

my swap is 750 ish meg

i left all the partioning down to suse 9.1 when i installed it i just created a free unpartitioned space at the end of my win hdd using partition magic tho i wont be using that from now on...

Cool! So, you resized a reiser partition, right?

With 1,5 G ram, you don't even need swap at all. Unless you plan to run some really huge apps, such as Mars surface modelling, World-population growing curve for the next 100 years... (he he, just kidding...).

With 1,5 G you load all system, graphical kde, gnome (or whatever you want) and stuff without need to virtualize to disk (swap). This is good, make things faster.

Linux is quite good at mem management. Right now I have suse's kde 3.2 loaded, with 1 gkrellm, 1 evolution, 2 mozillas, 1 openoffice window and 1 console and "top" tells me I use only 3.2 MB of swap. I have 256 MB ram.
