Resizing a Partition
 

Hi,

First off, I'm not 100% sure if this is a hardware question, but I hope it is.

Basically what's going to happen is, in a few days (about 2 weeks) I'm going to be getting a stick of 4GB RAM, whereas right now I'm running on 2GB.

I've been told it's a good idea to make the swap partition double the size of your RAM (I've been using 1024, but some Google searches say 1000 is fine).

Since I'll be getting new RAM, I'm wondering if using cfdisk to delete and then re-size it would be safe (or fdisk, but I don't have as much experience with that).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

My advice would be to wait until you add disk space to the system. If the existing swap space has been adequate, then adding more RAM should make the need for swap space less, assuming your usage pattern stays about the same. The rule of thumb of swap size being two times the RAM is about right, until you start getting into much larger memory scenarios. Swapping 10's or 100's of GB will start to get slow.

Okay, I see thank you. ^^ I think the most I'll make my swap partition is to about 6 or 8gb and I will wait until I add disk space to the system. I have an SSD coming too but that's not for quite some time now.
