research on building a new computer
Hi
Here are some thoughts on buying or building linux compat hardware. yes I am aware of the HCL and have made posts there as well, but its not easy to get a quick and dirty guide. And yes I am using this post for my research but it may help others,...I dunno (2) finegans sticky posts at the top of this forum are very good. And yes I am aware that some distros have their own HCL 3) http://www.linux.org/vendor/system/desktop.html tells you what others are selling. OPINION Not very up to date 4) http://www.linux-tested.com/linux_results.htm 5) http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fhard.php3 OPINION looks gooood 6) http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/2...graphics_cards as an example main site http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/2..._linux-02.html OPINION the best the comment on using Knoppix cd is not going to work if you are in the market to buy a new computer. anyhow feel free to add sites and comments EDIT change title to new computer in lieu of box |
A far better place to add these links (and any further ones) is in the Linux Links Section. Putting them here means that, over time, they will get pushed further and further down. Putting them in the Links Section means they stay there always.

BIOS updates
Intel and all the big boys all appear to need a dos type boot disk except epox that allows updates from a floppy but I can't find how to save the bios AND THE only major exception is gigaabyte Whom allows both a save and a update option from a bios menu. Anyone disagree? |
Nice tips on power cases and other stuff...video a bit out of date

Actually I had avoided ASUS due to a lq posting and a magazine article but Asus appears to allow update by a non-dos floppy like epox and there is mention of a cdrom so I assume it has a backup of the bios.
Gigabyte appears better options in having a backup bios as well as the save or update to floppy. And assuming your mobo will be compatible. |
