Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question Request for Opinion - Hardware RAID recommendations

I am currently running Slackware 13.37 and 3.x kernel. I am in the market and I have the drives to do it, to hook up a RAID 5 to the system, for file management, backups and what not.

My request is that I want to get an enclosure that will play nice with Slackware, and not take an engineering degree to configure. Recompiling the kernel is not a problem or adding modules. Just want to get at least an idea of what would be a good idea or an idea of what other people are using.

Any constructive suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

If this is not a production system,. then you should be fine with a run-of-the-mill sata card and external sata enclosure. I've got a cheap little rocketraid that works fine with an ... unbranded? enclosure.

I'm leaning towards a 5-8 bay external enclosure, if that helps clarify.
