replacing nvidia card on linux
 

Hi all
I want to replace my agp nvidia gfx card with something new on my Linux system What problems, if any, am I likely to run in to if I change to Radeon card. I am running Sabayon if this makes any difference. I am assuming that on boot the system will see the new card and give me basic graphics and then I could get hold of the correct / best drivers once I have the system up and running again.

(current geforce fx 5200 128 MB but want to get at least a 256, hopefully 512 card)

You should be aware that, while improving, ATI support for Linux is not as good as Nvidia. While you will most likely be able to get accelerated graphics working, it will not be as coherent an experience as it is with the Nvidia drivers/software.

Aside from that, there should be no serious issues.

You should manually change the video driver in your xorg config from nv or nvidia to vesa before swapping cards..

at least I would...

Ati support is pretty slim right now (getting better slowly)on Linux. I would STRONGLY suggest you stick with Nvidia on Linux.

Edit: Just do a search on radeon here and see all the problems posted.

replaced nvidia card with new nvidia card, now have console log in only no desktop
 

Hi guys
I managed to pick up a geforce 6200 256 meg and it works lovely on my windoze os but only have console log in on mandriva. Do i have to recompile with the new card in to get the right drivers etc or is something else. I am on xp at the moment so don't have the messages log available now. I will grab me laptop and come back with errors etc later. in the mean time, anyone have any ideas?

yeah, I would grab the drivers from the nvidia website and run them with the new card in. See if that helps anything.
