Your subject mentions a DVD burner only. And probably 98% of hardware out there these days runs Linux....and given how MUCH hardware there is, your chances of finding a definitive list is pretty slim. You can try:
https://linux-hardware.org/
...but again, chances are VERY high anything current you buy will be supported.

The drive connects to the computer through a SATA bus, like a hard drive does. If the motherboard accepts Linux, then Linux can use the connection.

I guess you mean one of these hard drive sized things that go in your desktop or (thinner ones) laptop?
It would be harder to find one that does NOT work with Linux.
What exactly is your problem?

Hello and welcome to LQ.
Yes, there used to be lists of HCL and in some cases for each distro.
Not sure I know where they might be today, I'd assume they still exist.
As mentioned above, I'd think almost all would work. I don't believe I'd even bother looking and just would buy one and plug in myself if it were me buying it.
You might find a few choices you are considering and post and maybe we could guess better. Pick one of the bigger name brands would tend to work.
There could be some issue with some boards on some booting where you may need to use a usb dvd. I'd consider that too and not play with the internal even.

I've never had an issue with an optical drive and Linux. However, if you wish to be extra-cautious, ThinkPenguin offers accessories guaranteed to work with Linux, including external optical drives. I have one of their externals and it works very nicely.
As an aside, I think that HCLs have faded because compatibility is not nearly so big an issue as it used to be. Based on what I've seen here, the primary issues today seem to be with certain wireless cards, graphics cards, and a few brands of printers. However, a web search for "linux compatible dvd drives" will turn up a number of articles and forum discussions.
Full disclosure: I have no relation with ThinkPenguin other than as a customer.

fransmolenkamp,
Any DVD writer from a well known brand such as Samsung, LG, Panasonic etc will do the job in Linux.
I have always used Samsung optical drives and never had a single problem.

solution
Replacement by LITEON DVD burner IHAS124-14 worked immediately, without installing any new driver!
I was still using opensuse 13.1.
