Replace Drive

In my server , the raid 5 with 3 hard drive are installed on the server , now , one of drive is failure that I will replace a new one , I know the system will rebuild the data to the new hard drive , but I still have the below query ,

1. the hard drive is hot plug supported , should I shutdown the server when rebuilding the server or keep it power on ?

2. when rebuilding , can I login to the server ?

3. any checking I need to do ? or any action I need to take ?

4. is it just simply replace , they will do anything for me ? thx.

If it's hot plug there is no need to power down and also no point. It wouldn't rebuild the disk until after you powered it back up anyway.

You should be able to login while the rebuilding of the replaced disk is occurring. The main impact of the rebuild is slower I/O because of course it is reading 2 disks to rebuild the 3rd one.

All of this of course assumes your other 2 disks are OK. If the system is still up now then it likely means they are. We once had a situation where 2 drives in a RAID 5 failed on a large disk array and lost terabytes of data.
