Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Repeated powering off of a SATA hard disk.

I have an embedded Linux system powering a DVR. The problem with this stupid system is that there is no suitable power off command! To power off I have to switch off the power supply. I am concerned that this action will drastically reduce the life of the hard disk. This concern emanates from the fact that when I switch the DVR off the hard disk makes an abnormal noise.

Any help is appreciated.

I found that the general opinion is that modern HDs are not damaged by power failures provided a failure doen not involve dangerous overvoltage or undervoltage surges.

Disk manufacturers specify the number of power failures the disk is good for, and the number is usually counted and reported by a smart attribute. It is much better to use shutdown, which will issue a Standby or Sleep command to the disk. That flushes the disk cache and unloads the heads gracefully.

smartctl -A /dev/sda
192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 8
