In RH-7.3 XFree86-3.x.x uses XF86Config and XFree86-4.x.x uses XF86Config-4, mandrake 8.2 was the same and mandrake 9 probably is too. So the file you edit depends on the version of X installed.

It might be the reason why I've always got 60Hz, I'll try to edit XF86Config-4 and /etc/modules.conf tonight.

Both RH 7.3 and Mandrake 9 use XF86Config-4 and will only use XF86Config IF the -4 file is missing. You will still have to edit the file with the changes I noted if you want to be using nvidia's driver instead of the standard XFree driver.
