reformating iPod

hello. I have an 20gb iPod and the OS just got screwed, there is no solution any more. I want to reformat it but i tried it using gparted and it told me it had to place a label, so when I tried to do it it told me there was a writing error but nothing else... so any advice would be welcome. Thanx!

Download Ipod's own software and use it to fix. It should bring your device up.

BUT: it runs on Windoze.

that is actually the problem man... :S apples formatting software does not recognize my ipod! I struggled with windoze to get it to see the ipod but the "iPod updater" software did not recognize it as an iPod, it said it did not have the software for that iPod, even if it is an "universal" updater and it does have my iPod included(or at least that is what it says on Apple's HP.
