redirecting output of compile to a file

Does anyone know why I can't redirect the output of compile (that fails) to a file?

Example: ./compile > somefile.txt

spew
spew,
spew,,

done.

Looking in somefile.txt and it empty.

Is it because the compile failed?

der....
