Redhat continously reboots after install

Hello!

I need to have my memory refreshed. I am attempting to install Redhat 9.0 on a Hewlett Packard Vectra XA (Pentium Pro @ 166mhz) with 196mb RAM and 60gig IDE. Everything installed great, no issues. However when it attempts to start the system it only gets as far as 'Ok, Booting the Kernel" when it reboots the computer. It does this continuously. It installed 2.4.20-8 as the kernel, with Grub as the loader.

I vaguely recall a parm that I used with a previous version (6.x or 7.x) that allowed it to work -- until a kernel was compiled with this parameter set as default.

I've tried various memory configurations (196 is the max recommended by HP) and did find that if I installed with 256m and then reduced it to 196m and started the system, it might get all the way to the startup tag of "Kernel configuration" -- actually not sure of that wording -- where it would hang.

There is a sound card installed as well as a 'built in' ethernet (HP Orig equip) which all functions previously both with Linux and Win 98.
Video is a Radeon 7000 PCI.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks
