RedHat 9 CD/DVD ROM problem
After upgrading from RH8 to 9 (I know RH9 is finished and I plan to move on when Fedora 3 comes out) I had major problems but I solved them with the exception of my cdrom. I have just installed a dvd rom to replace a cdrom and both this new drive and the old one work perfectly. I have two cd drives, hdc and hdd. cdrom1>hdd is a burner and works without problems but when I try to mount cdrom>hdc I get:
Could not mount device.
The reported error was:
mount: /dev/cdrom: can't read superblock
I am not running scsi emulation that I know of.
ls -l /dev/cdrom produced this:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Apr 14 18:31 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdc
dmesg | grep CD

Hi. Thanks for replying so quickly.
If I click on the desktop icon for cdrom or type
mount /mnt/cdrom/
I get:
mount: /dev/cdrom: can't read superblock
disc or no disc.
On the other hand if I try cdrom1 without a disc in I get:
mount: No medium found
Thanks

Hi
This happens with and without a disc in. I have tried it with several discs and it won't play. It works when I boot into windows though so there is something wrong with they way my linux system is set up.
If all else fails I will just have to swap my two drives and lose the use of my burner under linux so I can use my dvd drive but I would like to use both under linux.
Thanks

hi there
what i know is that in 2.4 kernels apart from scsi emulation u need to append a line like this during bootup in lilo or grub
"append hdc=ide-scsi"
so u can look into this direction also
regards

Hi
I don't run scsi emulation for these drives but I changed lilo.conf anyway and I still get the same error:
Could not mount device.
The reported error was:
mount: /dev/cdrom: can't read superblock
I don't think we are going to find a solution to this one so I will just swap the drives over and use my burner in windows. At least I will have use of my dvd and hopefully the problem will be fixed when I upgrade to Fedora 3.
Thanks for your help.

I did run scsi simulation for a while and my burner was ok but recently I was able to use my burner without it for some reason.
I swapped the drives over and now the dvd works but the burner doesn't but I have been thinking about it and I think it might be a defective ide cable. It might just be a coincidence that it shit itself when I upgraded the system so I will try a new cable and that might get both drives working.
Thanks for your help.
