I installed RedHat 8 on my HP Pavilion N5495 laptop. Wired (builtin) and wireless (PCMCIA card) networking are fine. I cannot get my PCMCIA modem to work however. It is a real modem and not a winmodem (Actiontec FM560LK). "Cardctl ident" lists the modem correctly.

During bootup the serial_cs module load yields the error "IRQ 3 failed". In the BIOS on my laptop, the infrared port was using IRQ 3 so I disabled it. Upon rebooting I get the same error. There are no other settings for IRQ of any type available in my BIOS setup.

Any suggestions?

Maybe some other device is using irq3? I would try to find out who is on that irq and see if you can bump the other device to a different irq. I use a 3com 56k pcmcia modem and it works great, so I assume your problem is likely just an interrupt problem..

Being a newbie and all, would you please tell me how to go about finding out what is using which IRQ? Thanks!!
