Redhat 8.0 + external Modem
Hi, Im having problems with Redhat 8.0 (kernal 2.4.18-14),
I have a hardware modem (external) on port com2 (ttys1), I have followed various guides to setup the connection for the internet but while i can dial the number and I hear the regular data sound I have not as yet been able to connect to the internet.
I am using KDE, and connecting using kppp, I have tried to use a manual dial using pppd, but I get the same problem.

I can get the modem to connect in windows but not in linux, I'm pretty sure that the dns servers that ive put in are correct (I asked my ISP) and Im pretty certain that mozilla is configured correctly.
Don't worry about being a newbie...we all are or were once.
Under kppp, after you select connection...let's start over. I will list off exactly what I have for my kppp setup.
After I select setup...
Accounts - phone costs is empty, volume says 0 byte
Device - works fine for you, skip
Modem - seems alright for you
Misc - pppd timeout = 30s
When I edit the account
Authentication = PAP/CHAP
Customized pppd arguments is empty
IP - Dynamic
Gateway - Default
DNS-automatic
Login script - none
execute - empty
Accounting - enable accounting box is NOT set (This is likely where you have Argentian activated.

hi, i tried what u said, without success, i seem to be able to connect to the remote computer but not authenticate with it, im wondering if i need to set up some sort of delay on the authentification, or if i need to use an authentification script,
Try setting it to manual DNS config. You are getting timeouts on the ConfigRequests. Here is where things start to go
wrong...
rcvd [LCP ProtRej id=0x9 80 fd 01 01 00 0c 1a 04 78 00 18 04 78 00]
Which is a Protocol Rejected message from the server. Beyond
that, I don't know. You might try the Redhat mailing lists or contact their support directly if you bought your version.
You ISP isn't MSN is it...if it is, that explains the whole shooting match.

lve tried changing my resolve.hosts file aswell as entering the dns servers manually, still ill have another go,
My ISP is BT Openworld, and while they dont provide linux support they also dont use a proxy system (AOL Stylee), technically i should be able to connect, ill actually give them a ring tommorow and see if i can get a technition to helo me, thanks for the advice, ill let u know how it gets on.
I had the same trouble,
don't know what accounting is but heres how i fixed it
start kppp > click edit > click the accounting tab > click the disable accounting box
there might be a step missing here but trust me its in there somewhere
please let us know if you fix it
