Redhat 8.0, Intel 845 support (82845gl)

I bought a Gigabyte G-MAX SFF system to be my second machine dedicated to Linux. (I am an admitted newbie to Linux, but want to learn)

Before I bought the system, I checked the Redhat hardware compat. list and the Intel 845 is there and it claims to support it and the onboard VGA chipset 82845gl.

So it is detected by RH 8.0 install correctly, but it will not run in 1600x1200 - I get a blank monitor on reboot, or the monitor displays "cannot display this resolution". Max display I can get working is 1280x1024 - but worse the icons and text all look very pixelated and ugly. (This is running in either 16bit or 24bit color)

I have an older Intel 810 based G-Max that is slow, but it works fine at 1600x1200 running RH 8.0 on the same monitor and looks very crisp and clear. Actually fonts look better than WinXP on this machine IMO.

I purchased the new system to be a faster replacement of the old, but I can't run the same res and it looks so bad I can't even work with it.

I've searched the Intel site, Redhat, Usenet and XFree.org and not found any useful help.

Intel's site says look to XFree or your stuffed. They also suggest that there is a commercially available driver set from:
http://www.xig.com/Pages/Atop/Hardwa...ChipINDEX.html

Anyone have any experience with these guys? Seems hard to swallow a video driver costing more than the whole OS though...

Xfree refers to David Dawes site/work:

http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html

But frankly the instructions are over my head and I'm afraid to use the beta release of XFree and invest all the time to set up my system if I mess up my RH configuration and prevent further automated updates

Any suggestions, direction or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
