Redhat 7.3 2.4.18-10smp kernal panic on sym53c8xx

Hi,
I recently upgraded my RH 7.3 kernal to 2.4.18-10smp and am getting a kernal panic when I try to gunzip a file. I have tried various files, and all the same. I am not sure if it only happens with gunzip, but that does seem to be the case... I only see part of the panic message, but it seems to be relating to the sym53c8xx scsi driver. I could be something further up but the console message is long enough that it extends beyond the screen, and I am not enough of a linux expert to know how to know if that message is in a log somewhere... I have searced the various log files, with no luck. Is anyone aware of a problem with the symbios scsi driver and this new kernal?

It should also be noted that I am also using RH software raid, and gzip seems to work fine. Basically, I gunzip a file.. then "ls", and boom.. kernal panic...

Also intersting is that when I go to another, almost identical machine (with regard to hardware, same MB, same mem, same dual cpu setup, same symbios scsi driver for root partition)same 2.4.18-10 kernal), I have not problems (yet anyhow). This machine does have both RH software raid and a hardware raid. The symbios scsi driver corresponds to the root partition, which is mirrored.. hardware raid on the data partition, mirrored...

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jeff

I have reverted back to 2.4.18-3smp and all is well.
