The kernel, as it's name suggests, is the core of the operating system, it allows you to interact with the computer hardware, by installing a more up to date 2.2 kernel (eg linux-2.2.25 ), you may find that it will have the module necessary to run your soundcard, however you may find that it's easier to use a newer version of RHL, such as RHL 7.3, it uses the 2.4 kernel which has much more features and supports much more hardware than the older release. Even if you are using RHL 6.1 because your hardware is limited (eg Pentium pro 166, 32MB RAM and 2GB HD ) you could still upgrade to RHL 7.2, with a bit of tuning you could squeeze loads of performance out of it. Go to www.tldp.org there you'll find a vast array of HOWTO's, they have an excellent kernel HOWTO.
Ok, I have some simillar spec machines in a cluster configuration, however I don't need soundcard support. I'll download linux-2.2.25 and see if it supports your card, if it does I'll take you through the steps to set it up.
Ok, I tested two kernels, linux-2.2.25 and linux-2.4.21, neither had support for this card, however, I did find these sites for you, read the documentation and see how you get on, I will also have a read and if you get stuck post a follow up and I'll see if I can help.
