Red Hat 9.0 on an Asus A7N8x Mobo

Hello all,

I have an asus a7n8x Deluxe v. 2 motherboard. It has onboard serial raid by sillicon images. I have a strip set up on the raid running windows xp. I also have a 100GB western digital HD on the Primary Ide channel. My question is can I dual boot with windows and RH9 with windows running on the SATA and linux running on the primary ide channel. I have tried to do it but the first time I lost windows because I installed grub on the sata rather then the primary Ide. the second time I tried it with grub on the primary. It seemed to work fine until I tried to boot into windows and then I got an error that ntldr could not be found. any help would be much appreciated.

thanks in advance,
Jeremy

do you have a floppy disc in your drive?
it appears most of the time, if you have a disc in your floppy drive.
also, how did you get red hat 9 to install on sata drives?

I dont have it installed on the sata drives. what I am trying to do is install rh on my primary ide drive. I just need to know if there is anything im missing possibly with the grub setup that would keep me from being able to boot to both operating systems. should I put grub on the ide drive or the sata side?

you should install grub on /dev/hda's first boot sector which was your ide drive.

thats what I figured but when I do that I cant load windows because it cant find ntldr to boot to windows. I think it has something to do with the serial raid, like grub doesnt know how to read it or something?

do you have a profile line in grub.conf?
it you have it in your grub.conf, then you don't have to use a floppy disc to book in window.

what should the profile line look like. Does it point to the SATA drives when booting to windows?

no, if you installed your linux on ide drive. then you just have to point it to your ide drive.
do "grub-install /dev/hda"
for the sata drive. if you want to access them, don't point it to sata. it doens't do nothing.
