Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Recompiling for Symmetric Multiprocessing and SOUND CARD

Hey guys

I have a question -- I have a custom built PC with an Intel D865PERL motherboard, and the 2.4.22 kernel i'm using with Slackware 9.1 works perfect, except lacks the symmetric multiprocessing support that hyper threading offers in my CPU (p4 3.06ghz)

I recompiled to 2.6.5, and I can no longer use my built in sound card! I've been trying for hours to get it to work (I don't even know what driver to use for it)

I have just decided to use 2.4.22, but is there any way without recompiling 2.4.22 to add support for hyper threading?

Or if not, can you help me with the sound card not being recognized (I'm fairly new to linux so go easy)
Thanks!

Ben

There is no way to get better hyperthreading support through modules. Your options are to either recompile a 2.4.22 or just go with 2.6.5 (in both cases enabling SMP). You might as well stick with 2.6.5 and just put more effort into getting your soundcard working.

try modprobe snd-via82xx
I've got almost the same sound chip and it works with the snd-via82xx module.
Also check if your volume's are up and unmuted.

But I don't know what sound modules to enable/disable/compile as module...

Do I module all of them? or do I enable them all?

HELP!

PS I've read that the intel i810 audio often works, but I modprobed it and its still not working (the sound) XMMS gives me the warning that says I have no soundcard...

PSS. The original 2.4.22 kernel lets me play sound...odd! Couldnt i cd to /usr/src/linux and recompile from there, adding hyper threading support, or has that kernel been *make mrproper*'ed already?

One way to check what modules are loaded while in the 2.4.22 kernel is to run 'lsmod'. This should list basically all the modules that you'll need to make sure you include when you make your 2.6.5 kernel.
