Recommended sound card for Redhat 64?

Dear Experts,

I'm having an awful time with my new server and sound card.

Other installs, sound has worked fine.
I believe it's partially because the sound came directly off
the motherboard in those cases.

But with this new server, it came with a sound card, no onboard.
The sound card works with windows. But not with Linux.
I've been swapping cards in and out, trying to get one
to work. Each has some partial success, but none meet all
of the requirements (below).

What is really frustrating is that I want the sound to go
to the green headphone jack on the front of the computer case.

To do this, there is a cable that connects the sound card, to
the front of the chassis.

The existing sound card that I have, has a connector for this.
It is an "HD audio", or an AC 97 connector. There two rows of
five pins, with one pin blocked up, so that the connector is
inserted in the correct manner. The cord is hard wired to the case.

You can see some images of the pins and the cords here:

You would figure that this would be a standard feature that would be listed
for sound cards. But it's rare to find it listed anywhere. When I
went to the computer store, I had to open all the boxes to see if it
was there or not!!!! Manufacturers, this is not that difficult!!

At this point, after a couple of days of struggle, I just want to buy a
simple sound card that works right out of the box.

Here are the requirements:
- gets instantly recognized by Linux (Redhat 5) 64 bit, and plays sound
with the standard Linux drivers. I believe I have all of the drivers installed,
because a few cards do play with them automatically.

- no installation of special Linux drivers required.

- the other big requirment is that the card have output to an HD Audio,
or AC 97 connector, and will play music through the headphone jack.

(Believe it or not, I have one card that works fine out the back,
but won't work through the HD Audio. But it works fine in Windows)

- will also work with Windows 64 bit.

Any good sound card recommendations that will meet these requirements?

I assume you are talking RHEL5 and not RH5? If you are talking RHEL5.0 I would get all the updates (5.6 is out) as a lot more hardware is supported.

Yes, I have the very latest software, just recently downloaded.

But I actually would prefer a simple sound card, that would meet
all the requirements above, even if I were I to install it on
an old version of Redhat.

Any good suggestions for a sound card?

You can still download RHEL5.0. So when you run ' cat /etc/redhat-release ' what does it report back.

Ok, you want to be able to run older versions of linux you will have to use a card that was produced before the oldest version you want to run. In the case of RH5 that would probably be 1998(a guess), which means finding a used ISA(?) based card and making sure the motherboard you are using(also needs to be from before the version was released) has an ISA capable port.

To tell the truth I have never run into a mainstream sound card that linux did not support out of the box. Most of the sound blaster (and compatible) cards work with most distros. As far as having the connector on the front of the case, that is just a wiring issue. Run the wire through the case and mount it to an open spot on the front.

so you DID install RHEL 6.0 and not 5 ????
rhel 6.0 is the current
or did you install old rhel 5.0 or the latest in the 5 series "RHEL 5.6 "

if 5.0 then it might be to old for the new sound card
if 5.6 then it "should " be supported
and if RHEL 6.0 then it "should " be supported

unless the OS was much older than the card . rhel5.0 might be to old for new hardware .

Good point.
