Why would you risk putting something designed as a long term storage device out in the open?

If you require remote access to it, there are secure ways to do that.

Of course I connected my NAS to the internet, as advertised by QNAP . Some things you need to learn the hard way. I disconnected both my QNAP NASses from the network and used sneakernet and a 4 TB USB hard drive to transfer my data. That was when I found out QNAP USB "3" ports are as slow as can be. Took me a week.

Now the only way to access something from outside is through a VPN running on a separate server (as rkelsen rightfully remarked).

Mine is capable of outbound but not inbound. When I said "connected to the Internet" I meant inbound, sorry if that wasn't clear. Mine are on a gigabit LAN and all my backups and data transfers are local LAN and fairly fast. VPN is the way to go if you need access from the outside. Not a need for me.
