FWIW,
I've been trying different distros for about 3 months now. I have an Intel 536ep/HAM Winmodem and it works OK. Intel has drivers for it on their web site for a number of distors. Search for 536ep. But still, I always have to worry about whether a distro supports this modem. I do agree, however, with the posts here about having an external modem--then this whole nonsense about drivers is mute. I'm looking for a US Robotics now.

Lightbulb more info on intel modem please

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. The pc-tel and the intel sound like they might be the ones to try. I really don't want to get one that a lot of people are already struggling with. I'm a little lazy - if the wheels already been invented, I'll just get one from the inventor.....
