Recommend a Rack-Mount server for home use?

I am looking at the idea of using a (relatively cheap around $1000 Cdn with everything except monitor) rack-mount server for home use. The primary use would be for C++ training and development with a GUI interface. Why rack mount? for easy storage in my rack as oppose to yet another desk top.

I know VMWare type solutions are possible, but I'd rather go with a native solution.

Can you make a recommendation? Where might I find used equipment of this nature.

These guys have some of the best prices on low-cost servers I've seen:

The systems are refurbs, if that matters to you.
