recognise my digital camera

Hi,
(my system: debian lenny)
I am trying to transfer photos from my Nikon D40 camera, however, when I connect it through a USB cable nothing happens (I remember when I did it in the past, it used to mount automatically and now it is not recognised (fdisk -l doesn't show it.)
This is the output of dmesg:

with all those I/O errors I would suspect a problem with the memory card in the camera.. have you tried a different memory card, or formatting the one currently in the camera using the utility in the camera menu ?

thanks for the reply,

nope, the card is fine - formatted using the camera utility and checked it earlier at work
