Recent USB problems

Hi there,

I have been using my USB without any trouble for a good while now. Most commonly to mount my iPod and PSP. Recently however I used deporphan (in Ubuntu) to find some orphaned packages and then removed them (I'm not sure this is the cause of my problems but it is the only thing I can think of). Now I cannot mount either of my usb devices (although my usb mouse still works fine).

I have been playing around a bit and found that /dev/sda no longer exists. I have also discovered that running "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices" hangs (I cannot CTRL-C, it just sits and does nothing, I have to close the terminal to get rid of it and even then it is still listed under ps).

I have usb-storage module loaded and ohci and ehci.

Any ideas???

Cheers,

Jon

Do you know which packages you removed? That'd probably help a whole lot, check the man page to see if deporphan logs stuff somewhere. Plug in your iPod and then post the output of 'dmesg'. Does 'lsusb' show anything? What does 'lspci' say?

libdns16

lsusb hangs, just as if I had tried to cat /proc/bus/usb/devices.

This is the output of dmesg upon plugging in my iPod:

Oh groovy. I'm getting an incredibly similar error with a USB hub I just bought. Very pissed off. Can't help you yet but I've got a thread in the hardware forum that nobody has replied to :(
