Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question rebuilding kernel to support 3112 sata controller...

I have been trying to get mandrake 10 (community edition) to work on my two striped hard drives, these are connected via an onbaord 3112 SATA controller. I have not been able to get this working yet, however... I have thought of a plan to get this working and was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me if this would work...

I plan to install MDK10 onto an IDE hdd and then re-compile the kernel on there with the 3112 SATA controller support built in, check that it works and then copy this onto a floppy. Then setup my raid array again on the SATA controller and try and re-install, but this time would I be able to load the kernel from the floppy before the installation starts and therefore it would detect the raid array correctly and I would be able to install mandrake onto it correctly.

Please tell me if this is correct, and if not, what should I do instead/if there's any other/better way of doing this.

Thanks VERY much in advance I will be so pleased if I can get this working...

Why would you need to reinstall? Just copy over the installation, edit fstab and install the boot loader on that drive. Should go just fine.

A buddy and myself were working all weekend on an ASUS board with the same controller.

Pain in the A$$ right now!

did you get it working?

I gave up on the idea... now im trying to install gentoo 2004 just on a normal IDE hdd...it's umm, not going very well either

I've had numerous errors when booting - cannot find eth0 (even though I compiled support for it into the kernel, also i get an error when it boots saying that it cannot "set the user font"

Since installing gentoo and understanding (kinda ) I don't think I could go back to a normal precomiled distro. I just love gento, it's just very hard to install... I'll reattempt the install tonight (4th time )

cheers

We only had problems with the RAID. I think what we are going to do is bust the stripe and put Windows on one drive and Linux on the other. Shoule be good to go after that. No time to waste during the week. Hell, we really didn't have the time to waste on it this weekend.

I share your sentiments on Gentoo. Been using it for a while now, and it is certainly a good distribution to work with.
