Realtek ALC655 under Linux
Hi,
I have a Shuttle SN95G5 SFF minibarebone, and it comes equiped with an on-board Realtek ALC655 AC97 sound chip. I want to upgrade my current kernel (2.6.5) to 2.6.9 but in the SOUND DEVICES menu I just can't find any option for the realtek chip...
Can anyone help me on which option I must activate in order to see where the Realtek ALC sound chipset is?? or a generic AC97 driver option??? any?
Thanks in advance,
Julio

Just curious the sound devices menu you are referring to is that the menu shown when trying to configure your kernel, or is it another menu specific to your distro.
do you get sound out of your realtek chip with the current kernel you have. if you do i wouldnt worry to much about its functionality after you upgrade kernel to 2.6.9

no, I mean... in the kernel configuration menu (in my case, menuconfig), in the device drivers menu (I think that's the name... don't remember well right now...)
there's the sound devices submenu, i think... where you activate support for ALSA, OSS, and in the PCI devices or ISA or PCMCIA devices... I can't find an option for the Realtek Chip, anywhere...
that's the menu entry i'm refering to...
can you help me with that?

According to my documentation, I believe to have the same chip on my Asus. By me it works with the VIA82xx module.
I was just trying to find out how to get the digital output to my new stereo working, (S/PDIF or something), and how to get Dolby Digital and DTS to my stereo. I was trying to study the .asoundrc file, but it was just a question of settings in alsamixer and using a program that would pass the data from my DVD. (Xine).

I am using a laptop with the RealTek ALC655 audio chipset.
I have sound, but the volume controls are screwy and I am not able to use any media players like XMMS or Xine. These programs give me error messages telling me I should probably install a sound driver.
There has to be driver support for this chipset. I have had this working successfuly in the past, but I don't remember where I found it or what I used.
I am bumping this thread hoping that somebody can help

Do you have problems with the SDIF output or with the builtin sound or with the digital output?
I think I compiled the driver in the kernel.
I have this in /proc
cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [V8237 ]: VIA8237 - VIA 8237
VIA 8237 with ALC655 at 0xe400, irq 193

Normal sound output, ie the speakers or headphone jack.
I have this
cat /proc/asound/cards
ICH4 - Intel 82801DB-ICH4
Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with ALC655 at 0xd0000c00, irq 10
