really strange problem with nvidia?

I need some help here, i really dont know what information might be usefull to solve the problem but here i go:
I am using a debian sarge linux with a custom complied kernel 2.6.9 on a Pentium III 800mhz proccesor with a Riva Tnt 2 of 32mb, an LG studioworkls 17' 710E monitor on my box and i was trying to get installed nvidia graghic card driver.
I followed these steps http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...debian+win4lin
after i tried many times and did no succeed (kernel panic, or not able to compile) i decided to do those steps again but not with the same kernel, and without patches, and specified i had a pentium III on the xconfig.
After that it complied fine (thanks m_yates!).
I then successfuly installed the nvidia driver followed the README steps but, it doesn't worked as i expected, it seems like images are not refreshed or something. for example in kdm part of the nvidiasplashscreen gets ontop of the login window and i can see username label and password lable (with an nvida background which is really the splash screen) but i can not see the text boxes or the buttons.
what did i try?
i tried using some agp options described on the nvidia appendics
i tried turning pnp bios on of
nothing else really i have no idea what else to try and didn't find any post with a similar problem.

so if somebody had the same problem or knows what did i do wrong please help.
here is a part of the xfree log that might be interesting:
"
