ReadyScan 636i install issues

I'm having issues installing a ReadyScan 636i that I just received from a friend. From the info I have gathered, i'm not sure that the scanner is entirely supported by sane. Running xsane does not detect the scanner, even if I run it as root, however; the result of sane-find-scanner is
Code:
bash-3.00$ su -c "sane-find-scanner"
Password:

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.
  # Also you need support for SCSI Generic (sg) in your operating system.
  # If using Linux, try "modprobe sg".

found USB scanner (vendor=0x0461, product=0x0381) at /dev/usb/scanner0
found USB scanner (vendor=0x0461 [NEC], product=0x0381 [ReadyScan 636i USB Scanner]) at libusb:002:002
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.
Here is the result of scanimage -L

Code:
bash-3.00$ scanimage -L

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
The output of dmesg shows

Code:
usb.c: registered new driver usbscanner
scanner.c: probe_scanner: ignoring additional bulk_in_ep:3
scanner.c: USB scanner device (0x0461/0x0381) now attached to scanner0
scanner.c: 0.4.16:USB Scanner Driver
other info that might be needed...

Code:
bash-3.00$ ls -al /proc/bus/usb/002/002
-rwxrwx--- 1 root scanner 18 2006-02-14 17:46 /proc/bus/usb/002/002
Code:
bash-3.00$ ls -al /dev/usb/scanner0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root scanner 180, 48 2001-03-25 14:04 /dev/usb/scanner0
