An optical drive has to be specifically built to use DVD-RAM: none of the ones in Macintoshes are, for example. Most newer PC drives are, so it's worth trying. The format, when you mount it, is UDF. If your drive is an old one, or just doesn't support the technology, you're just out of luck. The problem is physical format, with hard-sectoring, which the drive has to be built to recognise.
PS Rather belatedly, a warning. Be vary careful when using a UDF disk on your computer. The udf module for fsck was never finished, so if you damage the filing system, you can't repair it! Mount as read only.
