The module name is 8139too - so try typing (as root, at the console):

modprobe 8139too

...see what happens

Exclamation mode probe

when i do the modprob i get this message,
/lib/modules/2.4.18.14/kernal/drivers/net/8139too.o: No such device
Hint: ismode errors can be caused by incorrect mudule parrameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters . You may find more information on syslog or the output from dmesg/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/net/8139too.o: insmod 8139too failed

any help in this would be appreiciated

It sounds like you don't have that module on your system already and you need to download it somehow and install it. Additionally, I'm pretty sure that the normal rtl8139 driver will work for your NIC.

modprobe rtl8139

If it doesn't work, you'll have to somehow download the other one. After you've got that installed (do lsmod to make sure), you can run netconfig to set up your network connection. Make sure you've got your ISP's information (primary and secondary DNS IPs, domain name, DHCP server IP if needed, DHCP server name if needed). You should be good to go then.
