RAM upgrades to two PCs

Atm I have PC1:
Abit KG7-Lite
AthlonXP1600+
1x256Megs PC2100 266Mhz RAM
Abit Silurio GF3 Ti200 with 128DDR SDRAM
CDRW 48x16x48
40Gig HDD
Mandrake10.1

and PC2:
K7S5A
AthlonXP1700+
1x128Megs PC2100 266Mhz RAM
VooDoo3 3000 with iirc 16Megs RAM (love this thing tho it's a replacement one )
CDROM 48x
30Gig HDD
10Gig HDD - very old and loud
Win98SE and Mandrake9.2

Basically PC2 needs to be upgraded, and PC1 might get a boost too. I am was planning to put WinXP Pro (Classic style, as much crap disabled as reasonable) and Mandrake10.1 on PC2 but remembered WinXP'll want at least 192Megs RAM iirc if someone in the family plans to eg research online while using Office, and having AV&FW running. Gaming is not an issue on PC2. Both mobos have 2x184pin DIMM slots and can take PC2100 RAM.

So the main question is: could I buy 256Megs PC2100 RAM and mix it into these systems? I might be able to find out the brands of the current sticks but basically I'm likely to be matching brand or timing, as some PC2700 is just as cheep as PC2100 now. Anyone got any horror stories of mixing RAM?
Would PC2 want at least 256Megs, or would 384 be more reasonable and PC1 going without the 128stick/an upgrade? Atm PC1's doing fine even without any swap partition but it's about being able to run WinXP on both for family or resale, or even run the latest Mandrake&KDE.

Dabs.com has the following quotes:
Kingston ValueRAM 184Pin DIMM DDR RAM Non-Parity CL2.5
128MB PC2100 9.22
256MB PC2100 16.93

Microsoft quotes XP as 128Megs min, but when actually using the pc, what can I get away with and what's worth upgrading to?

If you stick with Kingston, you'll probably be ok...Now I've heard horror stories, but haven't experienced any myself. My server has a 512 Stick of Kingston DDR400, a 256MB stick of Crucial DDR 333, and a 256MB stick of generic DDR266, and it's never had any stability problems.

As for XP, I'd go with 384MB, or better yet 512MB. XP feels too slow to me with 256...maybe it's just me though.

Wouldn't that mix you've got make it all run at DDR266?

The cheapest 512 stick is:
Kingston ValueRAM 184Pin DIMM DDR RAM Non-Parity CL2.5
512MB PC2700 31.90
Better rating than 2x256 and at less than double the price, but I think I'd rather save the difference from 1x256 for a cdrw with dvd-rom and other minor improvements (new keyboard, etc).

Yeah, it all runs at 266. if I remember correctly the board only supports 266 FSB anyway. I just stuck all the extra DDR I had in it.
