RAM Type?

I have an HP desktop to toy with, and it has DDR3 RAM 2GB, but I cannot tell if it is 1333 or 1600 RAM. All the RAM must be the same type right? Because I want to buy some old RAM and there is DDR3 2 and 4 GB and 1600 and 1333.

On my RAM it is printed, 2GB 2Rx8 pc3 - 10600U - 09 - 10 - 80

What should I do?

on the RAM there should be a serial. You can put it into google and it will hopefully identify it.

The RAM is 1333, so it must must be compatible? Only 1333 MHZ in all slots?

I am using boot repair to examine the system or I need use it's Windows 10. lspci, dmidecode.. are not good, no report on the RAM and access denied, I do not now the default su password.

I think it depends on your motherboard; for mine it can take DDR3 1066MHz or DDR3 1333MHz SDRAM DIMMs. Currently I have two 1333MHz DIMMs and two 1600MHz DIMMs in it (8GB total RAM). Because I used different speed DIMMs (because I couldn't get two more 1333Mhz DIMMs for it), the board uses the lowest speed (1333MHz) - which is still the highest speed it can support anyway.

Bottom line: it still works and see's 8GB of RAM.

(It's the "Corsair" RAM below that's the 1600MHz DIMMs.)

In general no, usually motherboard can handle different timings, but it depends on the actual hardware, so I have no idea in your case.

Usually you can put faster ram in and it will default to lowest ram setting or you can set.

HP has wonderful information usually but one can use a ram configuration selector at ram OEM web sites.

Any machine can handle ram slower than the max mobo spec., as long as it's the same type. But since every type has a different pinout and socket, it's difficult to mix them.

This is a type of issue where it's best to go to the source.

Go to the website for the motherboard manufacturer. You should be able to download a manual for the motherboard, that should include the RAM specs.

If the manual is not there, do a web search for "manual [motherboard make/model]." There are numerous websites that archive hardware manuals.

Thanks, I bought and installed 2GB and 1GB DDR3 RAM, not knowing the speeds, but so far Windows 10 has a reading of 7 GB RAM up from 4. So it seems to be working! I will Install Linux, Mint or Gecko and report on it more exactly then.
