RAM support please

Hi

i want to order more RAM for my machine. How do i go about doing this? How can i tell which type of RAM to order? Do i need spare slots to put the RAM in or can i buy updated RAM to fit into the machine's slot?

I have the following machines:

Pentium Pro
64mb RAM

X86 family6 model 8 stepping (server)
260mb of RAM

Computer 80486
24mb RAM

thanks

It will be difficult if you do not have the manual for the motherboards. Because it depends on total memory the board can access and the max size of memory module.

For 486's memory had to be installed in a bank and each bank was 4 slots. Each memory modules in the bank has to be the same type. 486's used 30 SIMMS (I believe).

The same thing was true of the pemtium except there are 2 slots for each bank and they used DRAM/EDO memory. I believe that there are 16mb DRAMs out there.

If you don't have any free slots then you will need to replace existing modules with higher capacity ones. On some motherboards there were expansion modules you could add.

Don't know where you are located but it might be difficult to find memory for these PC's this old. No retail store will have any. The best bet would be to find an surplus equipment store, go to a swap meet or maybe even ebay.

thanks, but how do i know what type of RAM to find?

What do i need to look for on the RAM chip?

Look at the part number of the chip which will indicate the type, size and speed. If in doubt get the faster chip over the slower one.

I stand corrected.. I did find some places on the internet that sells 30 pin and 72 pin SIMMs.

And remember you need to fill a bank with all of the same type i.e. size and speed.
