Ram dule

First of all I want to apologize; for asking this question here. Because it is not exactly to do with Linux, but in any case I ask you because I know that I can get a better answer here then I have gotten any other place..

Now with that in mind here is the question..

I bought this system some time ago, and when I got it I was told that I could put my two ram sticks in different slots goops. Like one in group A and there other in group B as appose to putting both in group A. now I was told that this would make my pc run faster (or at least my ram)

the problme is they do not seem to work in different group slots (I was told that there may be some intgrated speed in the ram itself that needds some ajusting so that is why I as you guys..

Now thy are the same speed and size but I am wondering why can't I run them haven them in slot a and b the pc does not come on unless I have them both in group A or group B ..

so is there any thing that I can do some program that I can use to set them up to work correctly..

I am sorry if what I am asking is hard to understand and but I not thiniiing veryt well tonight but if you do understand I would apresate any help you can give..

thank you

just a small note: if there is some program that I need to use (I am running Ubuntu)

There are no programs, but on your mother board , the ram slots what colors are they, match the colors up eg:

Ramslot #1 (Blue) ----> RAM (2048MB)
Ramslot #2 (Black)

Ramslot #3 (Blue) ----> RAM (2048MB)
Ramslot #4 (Black)

This is what my setup looks like.

Thank you all.

It seems to work now (all be it only on Linux for some reason)

I have 2 yellows slots and 2 black. Yellow is first then black I tried it on the two yellow and it would just load up to the memory test it would show that I had 2 gig of memory but would not go any further then that.

If I pressed delete or F8 it would say loading or opening up bios but it would not go in.

I then put both in the black slots (which should be 2 and 4) and it loaded right up but only Linux will open up windows does not seem to load up..

I think this is what happened the first time I tried it that is why I just ran the ram in the same group. At that time I was not using Linux so that is why it did not seem to work.

any way if any one has an idea why Windows will not load Up I would like to know..

Thank you all for the help..

Bad or mismatched RAM ?

download memtest86+ and test that memory, would be my first step.

Both sticks of RAM you have are from the same manufacturer and are the same part number right ? when doing Dual Channel memory both sticks should be an exact match, not just speed and size but manufacturer also imho. usually memory is sold in a set with two identical sticks of RAM for use in a Dual Channel setup.

OK I made sure that they were the same all around when I bought them so they are the same. And I downloaded the program that was suggested it gave a pass so the ram seems to be fine also.

That I do not know if I do or not (it has been some times scene I have updated a bios so I do not remember where I would go to get it.

One more thing after turning it on and of for a billion and a half times it came on fine once or twice. Then it locked up and took servile times for windows to load up again it did stay on for a while however it seemed to lag and well lots of other problems seemed to follow also. so I changed them back.. But I will do it again after I update the bios (where is that again?
