Ralink RT2870 network adapter - Ubuntu 16.04

* I'm very new to linux and ubuntu so please bare with me

I just purchased a network adapter which according to the driver CD is a RT2870 (It isn't written on the adapter). I've installed other things using commands before but the instructions on the readme file that came with it are quite confusing.

Has anybody made this network adapter work successfully in ubuntu? I'd really appreciate some simple step by step instructions of how to make this work.

Also I'm sorry if I've posted this in the wrong section of the forum.

A simple fix could also be to buy a network adapter specifically designed for Linux, such as the Wi-Pi or this TP-LINK (with this driver for the TP-LINK).

Hello and welcome to LQ.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/77643...r-ubuntu-16-04 suggests that the driver is already installed so you may only have to connect it if your user has permissions to connect.

First we do need to see what Ubuntu thinks might be there as posted above by the List commands, lsusb or lspci. Use only one or the other depending on the way it connects. I assume you have a usb but in case.

This post has the general steps if you do need to add in drivers. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=960642 But this would be for some other device as your device should be supported.
