Raid question

I am new to raid and Linux, I have set up a raid 1 array on ide3 on a MSI K7N2 Delta Mobo with no problems. However I have not got another drive installed on ide1 or 2 I have tried to install Suse 9.1 but it says there is no hard drive. I am correct in saying I still need to have a hard drive on ide1 even though I have got two on Ide3 I was assuming that as there were two drives on ide3 that this would be ok

What do you mean by IDE3? Is this a hardware RAID controller, and if so, is it supported by SuSE? (http://cdb.suse.de/index.php?LANG=en_UK)

If it's an IDE channel, can your BIOS see the drives when you first boot up? Check that one device is set to master and the other to slave (you may need this for hardware RAID as well in some cases; see your RAID documentation).

Personally, I have two hard disks on seperate IDE channels and use software RAID set up through the SuSE installation.

Hope that helps,

Linux supports software RAID through a set of kernel drivers that you can configure using YaST2 (the SuSE installer/setup tool).

You will need your hard-disks to be visible as IDE devices; you can then set up partitions on them that can be added to a RAID device. The RAID device shows as a partition.

When you go through the install process and get to partitioning the hard disks, read the blurb on the left-hand panel. It tells you something like "Press Advanced to set up options like software RAID"; at this point, follow the instructions…
