Raid array question
 

Hi guys

Just wondering if there are any PCI RAID cards that are supported by Linux? with driver disks?

I,ve got a Highpoint on my mobo, but that seems far to difficult to actually get working.

That depends, I just took a short tour through the kernel config for 2.4.16 (newest I had on hand from work :p ) and found a lot of goop for ali and IBM and Adaptec gear and blah blah blah blah. There are a couple of the brand new RAID cards or onboards that apparently are a bit of a headache, but anything over a year old should be no problem by now. What's the model? Oh, and how in the heck have ya been Recoil?

Hey i,m doin good, stil messin about with Linux, but I been a bit busy. Gonna start a new LFS soon, thats the purpose of this question. I,m on Mandy 8.2 now.

At present I have an HPT370 on my ABIT KT7-RAID, but apparently, it,s a nightmare to setup, especially in LFS I reckon lol, so I,m looking for an alternative and probably a PCI version will be easier.

So who,s got what working, and how easy was it?

How are you then finegan ??? what version of Linux you running this week :p

I use a Mylex DAC960 with linux and I love it! It's one of the best RAID card's I've used. of course, I use firmware 2.73 (there's a wonderful story as to why I can't upgrade it...) and it works like a charm. I LFS'd from that and it never died on me. Of course, I've since switched to freebsd on that machine (because of a spinlocking issue) and so I can't really comment on it anymore...but when I ran it, the RAID card rocked.

Duh... Abit K7V Raid, be have the same bloody board! Back when you and Taz and I were chattering like soccer (football) moms (mums) that came up once. I remember now. I was able to get the raid card to initialize properly back in March when I did an LFS on my Athlon when I was bored and down with the flu for a weekend. It was just a matter of kernel configuration as far as I can tell, and then a correct fstab entry, but I've never had the extra drive or two to play with it.

Uh, distro this week?...

Uh, SuSe 7.3 and RedHat 6.2 both for Sparc, an old SS10 and a newer Ultra 5. The old Redhat is old, and I can't get a decent browser to compile. SuSe? YaST can lick my, well nevermind... Its a pity though really as the only monitor I could get to work with the "Oh my crack smoking Jesus" GLX video card in the UltraSparc is a pitiful little 15-inch. The guy I had picked up the SS10 off of ($50!) had tried to do an LFS on it, but had given up with a lot of glibc thrashing. Pity really.

Aside from that, RH 7.2 I finally tried and haven't hated, Mandy 8.2 is sitting waiting to be burned, I got a bag copy of SuSe 8.0 from someone, but the SuSe 7.3 experience is still stinging. The laptop farm is gone, sold off, parted out, or otherwise used. I've got a DSL line finally, having moved with the express reasoning of just getting closer to a CO so I could get it. 5 static IPs, uses for 3 of them and wondering what other domains to run...

Aside from that, Slackware 8.1-rc1... ISOs soon! That, and I've been poking around a project that looks like fun on your side of the globe, with www.outlawlinux.tk

On the IDE front, I've had a lot of luck with the 3ware RAID cards. They are well supported under Linux. I had some, but less, luck with the Adapaptec ones.

With SCSI, I used the Compaq SMARTArray cards (which are absolutely fantastic), many of the AMI megaraid cards and some NEC cards with no problems.

Just a quick question, on how I would go about installing a raid pci card.

Install a Linux distro on a normal ide setup, with enough space for $LFS install.
Install $LFS with normal kernel, find out what needs to be installed, complie the kernel mod and driver. Boot into $LFS to test.

Install 2 new hard drives on Raid.
Format from within $LFS, copy and past partitions over, update LILO or GRUB.

Boot into RAID $LFS to test, if it works, I can remove first harddrive, and update LILO or grub.

Does this sound about right guys? or is there a simpler method?
