RAID 1 through linux? or on board

I just got a new computer with 2 200GB SATA hard drives. I am going to be putting linux on it, either Debian or Fedora, and I was wondering:

Which is the better way to go, create the RAID 1 array through the BIOS (its an abit motherboard that has on board RAID) or leave the 2 hard drives as they are and let linux create the array through its software raid?

any preferences?

I suppose it depends on how well linux supports the onboard RAID controller.

There are plenty of horror stories on this forum with people struggling with certain RAID controllers.

A bit of research before hand should help the install go as smooth as possible (without the specific model number of your motherboard there not alot of help the members of this forum will be able to give you).

Roger That. Its an Abit AV8. I will do a little digging. I was just wondering redundancy-wise. Is there any benefit to doing hardware raid over software raid.
