Radeon X700 + Fan is too loud

Hello altogether,

I have installed the proprietary ATI-driver for my Radeon X700. The driver has been installed successfully; glxinfo shows "Direct Rendering: Yes" as output, GoogleEarth is running satisfying - almost all seems to be perfect.

The problem is, that, with the fglrx driver, the fan of my Radeon-card is more active and louder than with the "radeon"-driver. With Windows I reach this loudness only by playing games, which need much resources.

If I switch to runlevel 3 (my distribution is SuSe 10.2, that means, no X is running), the revolutions per minute do not change.

Does anyone know a tool to regulate the fan of my graphics adpater? Is there a possibility to use another driver, which enables 3D?

try lower your GPU freq, list available modes by:
aticonfig --lsp

and then set to lower freq with
aticonfig --set-powerstate=NUMBER

You can also look around for a daemon that will dynamically control ATI's powerstate.

Hi and thanks for your answer.

Code:

sebastian@sebi:~> aticonfig --lsp
    core/mem      [flags]
-----------------
* 1: 425/432 MHz  [default state]

Why there's only one powerstate available and how can I change this?

With Windows the fan must have different stages in which it is running because only in load the fan works faster.

Rovclock

Hi,

Try rovclock and "underclock" your card.

HTH,
chris

Now that I have a post I'm allowed to post the URL: http://www.hasw.net/linux/

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll try out this utility and post the results.

edit:
I have tested it now and if I set the core-frequency to 100 MHz, the fan is quiet enough^^

This can't be a passable solution. As I already said, the fan is always running at 425 MHz under windows and I can't hear the fan because I am not using ambitious applications.

Does anyone know a possibility to control the fan-speed?

edit2:
After my CPU temperature increased from 40° up to 70°, I decided to rechange the GPU-frequency back to 425 MHz.

I have the exact same problem with a X1900XT, except I'm using a 3rd party RPM driver package (probably the same driver I guess though?). I don't know what's going on, as displaying X is hardly graphics-card intensive (I wouldn't have though).

Did you find a solution to this problem?

Thanks and regards.

No I still have this problem. I would underclock the GPU, but then my CPU temperature increases up to 70°.

Maybe I'll buy another fan/cooler for the Radeon-card and then I would control the fan speed manually with my fan controller.
