Radeon drivers @ XFree86-4.2.99.X

How to make the official linux radeon drivers (fglrx) work with XFree 4.2.99.X?

They work fine with the default RH 8.0 XFree but when I upgraded it to 4.2.99.3 I cannot start my X.

The error msg is sth like this:

---> DRI 4.1 found but required 3.0.X

Is there any way to make the drivers work with DRI 4.1?

Cheers :]

In short ...no.
Xfree-4.2.99 is in fact 4.3.0 and compatibility has been broken a while back.
You'll have to wait for ATI to release a version that's compatible with XFree-4.3.0.

In the meantime, if you didn't backup /usr/X11R6, you'll need to reinstall XFree from your install cd and ATI's driver to get "fglrx" going again.

I have rh8 and a pci radeon card. I just recently installed xfree86 4.2.99.3 and mine works but i cant get direct redering to work so far. For info on how to get it to work go to
http://dri.sourceforge.net/
go to the help and faq page.
scroll down to the section on installation and configuration
click on the question How do i enable PCI Radeon support for x86?
this will help with PCI Radeons.

For Agp Radeons u need to follow the directions in the documentation page. look in the DRI Users Guide for starters.

I hope this help a little...

also u may have to manually edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file in the "Device" section so that it reads something like this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Radeon 7000"
VendorName "ATI"
Driver "radeon"
Option "AGPMode" "1"
End Section

change the identifier to whatever radeon card u are using. the 7000 is mine.
If u have a PCI Card add this under option instead:
Option "ForcePCIMode" "True"

also under the Section "Screen"
change the Device line to "Radeon"

u can get more indepth info from
http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.0/DRI10.html

Question ...pssst!

does this driver work with the older radeons?

i have a 7000PCI and the driver name that came with RH8 is radeon

if there is a newer driver than the ones that came with RH8.0 then please let me know. i'm have troubles getting direct rendering to work in xfree86 4.2.99.3 with my vid card and i think new drivers might help. however; ati doesnt produce drivers for anything older than a 8500 and DRI doesnt official hav support for the older pci radeons...
