Unhappy Radeon 9700 not working

I've just installed Linux Debian and everything works out beautifully. But I still have one problem.

I can't make my Radeon 9700 work.

I've used the driver from schneider-digital.net but still - when I do a fglrxinfo the output is:

OpenGL vendor string: VA Linux Systems, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 Mesa 3.4.2

And that's not what I supposed to be.

I've tried Tux Racer - just to see how the driver and OpenGL work.

But this game runs extremely slow.

I've also tried to: insmod fglrx but my system says this moduled doesnt exist.

Does anyone know what I've done wrong.

Greetings, thaufer

I just wanted to let you know that the R300 chipset on the vid card is the problem!

I have a Radeon 9500 Pro....which is the same chipset.....and I have same problem....2d but no 3d hardware accel.

has something to do with the kernel not supporting the R300 chipset

there is supposed to be a solution using the FireGL drivers...and I am trying to get some help on that now, but I think it may involve recompiling the kernel...

if I figure it out I will post an answer for you....and if you can do vice versa if you figure it out first ----that would be awesome...

cheers,

DH

http://www.schneider-digital.de/html/download_ati.html

Go there, that is the site that hosts the latest FGLRX drivers, download and install those on your system and your card will run fine, also make sure to do an

# opengl-update

make sure to enable DRI in your kernel character devices sections, and disable all video cards below it.
