radeon 9600xt gnome bootup crash on fedora core 1

Ok I'm a newbie for one so bear with me for the lack of detail explaining the problem. I have a Radeon 9600xt with Fedora Core 1 on an emachines T2615. I downloaded all the up2date packages since 3/07/04 and I have installed the the ATI proprietary linux driver 3.7.0 and I have done the check.sh to see what version of XFree86 I have (which is 4.3.0) When I reboot and reload fedora, it promps that it cannot load X windows correctly. It guides me to the point where I choose "Ati Radeon 9600 Pro" from the display hardware menu. It loads the login screen and after I login with my information, it begins to load gnome and then the screen freezes. I need to know what im doing wrong...otherwise I will never get to see how well ut2004 demo on linux
